The isos and beta4-beta5 iso deltas for 32 and 64 bit processors are available from the testing directory at the MEPIS subscriber site and public mirrors.
The big change that resulted in another Beta release is the availability of OpenOffice 2.3. In addition, ksynaptics and spamd were added to the iso images; and Firefox, 915resolution, and the ALSA Utilities were updated. And the latest version of Audacity was added to the MEPIS pool.

Good news for MEPIS users! The MEPIS documentation team has released a new MEPIS User's manual under a Creative Commons License. With over 60 pages, the manual covers many questions from installation, to network configuration, to using applications. Upon reviewing the manual, Warren said "I am very grateful to the documentation team. I've wished for a long time, that MEPIS would have a manual like this. One that will help new and old users alike to get the most out of MEPIS Linux."

Read the full release announcement here.
Download here.

Final Release: Sabayon Linux 3.4 "miniEdition"

Excerpts from the release announcement.

SabayonLinux x86/x86-64 miniEdition, commonly called the "mini", is the CD release of the latest SabayonLinux x86/x86-64 DVD. Next up we have a variety of
Live images:

* Fedora Live (i686, x86_64, ppc) - A good general use Desktop live
image. i686 even fits on a CD!

* Fedora KDE Live (i686, x86_64) - A Desktop based on the KDE software
suite. i686 even fits on a CD!

* Fedora Developer Live (i686) - A Live image designed for software
developers.

* Fedora Electronic Lab (FEL) Live (i686) - A live image designed for
engineers working on electronics. It is available from the MEPIS subscriber site and the MEPIS public mirrors.
MEPIS has discontinued using Ubuntu binary packages in favor of a combination of MEPIS packaged binaries based on Debian and Ubuntu source code which is combined with a Debian Stable OS core and extra packages from Debian package pools.

Warren Woodford of MEPIS explains the change "By using the latest Debian and Ubuntu source code for building user applications, we can provide the best latest versions of the applications users want the most. And by building on top of a Debian Stable core, we can provide a release that has the the stability and long life that users want."

Warren continues "Most Linux users are tired of having to reinstall every 6 months in order to have up-to-date applications. We expect that with this approach MEPIS can offer a superior user experience that will be incrementally upgradeable for 2 years without reinstallation of the OS."

The prebeta includes a 2.6.22 kernel, Debian Etch core, KDE 3.5.7, Firefox 2.0.0.5, Thunderbird 2.0.0.4, and OpenOffice 2.2.1. This is an early release with many rough edges. In particular the splashy boot splash does not run reliably, some extra kernel drivers are not yet compiled for the new kernel, some gui components are not themed for MEPIS, and the prebeta has had very limited testing.

Read the full release announcement here.
Download here.

Alpha Release: openSUSE 10.3 Alpha 7

Excerpts from the release announcement.

All of the MEPIS Assistants and the Installer were updated to fix minor problems reported by testers. Amarok was updated to version 1.4.7. There were minor updates to some KDE 3.5.7 packages. Security updates to a few Debian Etch packages brought the MEPIS Debian Etch core in sync with Debian GNU/Linux 4.0r1, the Debian Etch update which was released last week.

The open source rtl8187 wireless driver was added to the kernel. Version 6.9.60beta1 for 32 and 64 bit processors is available from the testing directory at the MEPIS subscriber site and the MEPIS public mirrors.
Since the prebeta of 2 weeks ago, there have been several changes which are included in Beta 1, a 2.6.22.3 kernel, kernel drivers for the ralink family of wireless cards, other updated drivers, KDE 3.5.7 updates, better appearance of splashy, and the latest Debian Etch security updates. The LiveCD now offers an option to boot with the aufs rw filesystem but this is not yet well tested.

MEPIS 7.0 is based on a Debian Etch core combined with up-to-date user applications that are recompiled by MEPIS from upstream Debian and Ubuntu common source code. Debian Etch users are welcome to get their updated applications from the MEPIS pools. Warren Woodford says "If you want the stability of Debian Etch and also the latest user applications, 7.0 was made for you. And if you are a Debian Etch user, you don't have to upgrade to MEPIS, in order to use the applications we recompile."

Read the full release announcement here.
Download here.

Final Release: Debian GNU/Linux 4.0r1

Excerpts from the release announcement.

The Debian project has updated the stable distribution Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codename Etch). This update adds security updates to the stable release, together with a few corrections to serious problems. As always, the first point release also corrects a few issues that have been noticed too late in the release process to stop the release, but still should be fixed.

This point release for Etch also includes an updated release of the installer, which includes the following changes:

kernels used in the installer have been updated to ABI 2.6.18-5; as a result, some "small" images (for example netboot and floppy images) included with the original Etch release will no longer work (but the new images included with the point release will work, as well as the full CD/DVD images from both the original release as well as from this point release)

updated mirror list

support added for certain USB CD drives that were not being detected

incorrect setup of gksu fixed when user chooses to install with the root account disabled; this prevented the execution of administrative tasks in GNOME

important translation fixes in partman for Catalan and Romanian

Please note that this update does not constitute a new version of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no need to throw away 4.0 DVDs/CDs. Instead you only need to update against ftp.debian.org or a mirror after an installation, in order to incorporate those changes. New CD and DVD images will be available within the next week at the regular locations.

Upgrading to this revision online is usually done by pointing the aptitude package tool (see the sources.list(5) manual page) to one of Debian's many FTP or HTTP mirrors. A comprehensive list of mirrors is available at:
http://www.debian.org/distrib/ftplist
Read We expect that KDE 4 will not be final in time for the MEPIS 7.0 release, but by integrating KDE 4 now, we can insure that 7.0 will be "KDE 4 ready."

Both 32 and 64 bit versions are available. They are about 1 GB each and include all of the KDE 4 applications that are working at this time.

KDE 4 Beta 1 is a very early release and is meant for developers, testers, and reviewers. Warren recommends "The release is sluggish, be patient when clicking to launch something. If you look past the rough edges, you will see the beginnings of a world-class desktop experience. If something doesn't work, you could consider reporting a bug at the KDE project, but I would recommend holding off until the next Beta release before submitting a lot of bug reports." For more information about KDE 4.0 Beta 1 see: http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-4.0-beta1.php

Jos Poortvliet of the KDE Project said: "The KDE project is happy to see MEPIS Linux leading the way in bringing the next generation desktop technology to their users. This decision of early adoption of KDE 4 by the MEPIS developers will ensure a premier KDE experience for the users. We hope KDE 4 will be appreciated, and we look forward to the constructive comments from the Mepis community."

The Live DVDs were built using a MEPIS 7.0 Etch core and include the usual MEPIS kernel and hardware compatibility features. Since KDE 4 is functionally different than KDE 3 and also in an early Beta state, a minimal KDE 3 installation remains on the disk to facilitate exploration by the user.

The KDE4 packages were compiled from the Deb-untu developer upstream source. Experimental packages from Debian svn and from Ubuntu universe were tested. Both built and ran, but the ubuntu packages were more functional.

Read the full release announcement here.
Download here.

Test Release: openSUSE 10.3 Beta 1

Excerpts from the release announcement.

The openSUSE team is proud to announce the first Beta release of openSUSE 10.3. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Tribe 3 is the third in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Gutsy development cycle. The Tribe images are known to be reasonably free of show-stopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Gutsy. You can
download it here:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/gutsy/tribe-3/ (Ubuntu)
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/gutsy/tribe-3/ (Kubuntu)
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/releases/gutsy/tribe-3/ (Edubuntu)
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/gutsy/tribe-3/ (Xubuntu)

See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mirrors for a list of mirrors.

Another set of new features landed in Tribe 3, and are ready for large-scale testing. Please refer to the following web pages for details:

http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/tribe3 (Ubuntu)
https://wiki.kubuntu.org/GutsyGibbon/Tribe3/Kubuntu (Kubuntu)
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GutsyGibbon/Tribe3/Xubuntu (Xubuntu)

This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs. Among these are the following (so you don't need to bother reporting these if you encounter them):

* The desktop CD hangs on a lot of systems, especially slower ones with little RAM. Sometimes it is just slow, sometimes it will hang eternally. If you experience this and waiting a bit longer does not help, try to restart the computer and the live CD. If that still does not help, please use the alternate CD.

* On Edubuntu server installs, the "Building LTSP root" step takes a very long time (in the order of 15 minutes) without visible progress. It will eventually finish, though.

If the graphical system does not come up or is very slow, please file a bug against compiz:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+filebug

Please include a copy of the files ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and the output of glxinfo and xdpyinfo.

If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop Gutsy, have a look at the gutsy-changes mailing list:

http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/gutsy-changes

Please be aware that this list usually has several dozen mails every day.

We also suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce list if you're interested in following Ubuntu development. This is a low-traffic list (a few posts a month) carrying announcements of approved specifications, policy changes, alpha releases, and other interesting events.

http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-announce

Bug reports should go to the Ubuntu bug tracker:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu

Read the full release announcement here.

Alpha Release: openSUSE 10.3 Alpha 6

Excerpts from the release announcement.

AJ used to write here, that he's glad to announce. I can't say I am - I am relieved I can announce openSUSE 10.3 Alpha6 to you. I didn't have a chance to put too much testing into more than the i586 DVD5 and the KDE CD. But I didn't want to wait any longer either. So I'm left with hoping the best.

Important Changes Since Alpha5
==============================

* Linux 2.6.22
* libzypp 3.11.8
* gcc 4.2
* Continued splitting of packages to reduce size
* Introduction of x86_64 CDs for both KDE and GNOME

This is a first alpha release containing the new refactored libzypp software management library. The goal was to deliver a working version for this alpha, so expect rough edges, unusal slowdown and behavior, for example YaST integration is really alpha quality. All bug reports are very welcome.

Media and Download
==================

openSUSE 10.3 Alpha6 for i386, x86-64 and ppc comes as different media sets:
* 1 DVD containing the contents of the 5 CDs and the NonOSS AddOn CD
* 1 CD with a default KDE installation (not for ppc yet)
* 1 CD with a default GNOME installation (not for ppc yet)
* 1 AddOn CD with only NonOSS packages on it
* 1 AddOn CD with language packages that are used for extra languages (the DVD contains support for english, french, italian, spanish, german, chinese, japanese, czech, danish, norwegian, khmer, hungarian, polish) (the DVD has support for installation in all languages, just extra packages are only on this extra media)
* DVD/CDs containing the sources corresponding to the media

We have created Delta ISOs from openSUSE 10.3 Alpha5. Please use them for download.

The DVDs and the source media are only available via bittorrent.

Read the full release announcement here.
Download here.

Release Candidate : Damn Small Linux v4.0 Alpha 1

Excerpts from the release announcement.

DSL v4.0 Alpha 1 is now available in the Release Candidate area.

This is a very different version of DSL. But at the same time die-hard Ubuntu supporters must be worried. Here is why.
Finally PCLOS has taken lead from Ubuntu on the last 3 months based rankings on distrowatch.com. The H.P.D. today showed 2669 for PCLOS against 2668 for Ubuntu.

So the trend is clear Ubuntu is loosing the race to PCLOS. Ubuntu has been the leader quite for a long time and established its reputation. PCLOS on the other hand is relatively new and need to maintain its good work to be at the top of the distro race.

But certainly both the Distributions are really great. As always, not every person is satisfied with these two but overall they have many more positive responses than the negative ones.

I hope this race would continue indefinitely as this would help the Linux and the community grow as a whole.

Final Release : Damn Small Linux 3.4

Excerpts from the release announcement.

DSL v3.4 is now released.
Final change log:

1. So, without further ado, announcing Slackware version 12.0! Since we've moved to supporting the 2.6 kernel series exclusively (and fine-tuned the system to get the most out of it), we feel that Slackware 12.0 has many improvements over our last release (Slackware 11.0) and is a must-have upgrade for any Slackware user.

Among the many program updates and distribution enhancements, you'll find two of the most advanced desktop environments available today: Xfce 4.4.1, a fast and lightweight but visually appealing and easy to use desktop environment, and KDE 3.5.7, the latest version of the award-winning K Desktop Environment.

Here are some of the advanced features of Slackware 12.0:

- Runs the 2.6.21.5 version of the Linux kernel from ftp.kernel.org. Also included is a kernel patched with Speakup to support speech synthesizers providing access to Linux for the visually impaired community. The 2.6.x kernel series has matured into a stable kernel, and provides reliable performance for your desktop or your production server.

- System binaries are linked with the GNU C Library, version 2.5. This version of glibc also has excellent compatibility with existing binaries.

- X11 7.2.0. This is the X.Org Foundation's modular X Window System. You will notice many more X package than before, and it's probably best to install them all. There's been much activity in the X development world, and the improvements here in terms of performance and hardware support are sure to be only the beginning.

- Installs gcc-4.1.2 as the default C, C++, Objective-C, Fortran-77/95, and Ada 95 compiler.

- Support for fully encrypted network connections with OpenSSL, OpenSSH, OpenVPN, and GnuPG.

- Apache (httpd) 2.2.4 web server with Dynamic Shared Object support, SSL, and PHP 5.2.3.

- PCMCIA, CardBus, USB, IEE1394 (FireWire) and ACPI support. This makes Slackware a great operating system for your laptop.

- The udev dynamic device management system for Linux 2.6.x. This locates and configures most hardware automatically as it is added (or removed) from the system, and creates the access nodes in /dev. It also loads the kernel modules required by sound cards and other hardware at boot time.

- New development tools, including Perl 5.8.8, Python 2.5.1, Ruby 1.8.6, Subversion 1.4.4, git-1.5.2.2, mercurial-0.9.4, graphical tools like Qt designer and KDevelop, and much more.

- Updated versions of the Slackware package management tools make it easy to add, remove, upgrade, and make your own Slackware packages. Package tracking makes it easy to upgrade from Slackware 11.0 to Slackware 12.0 (see CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT). The slackpkg tool in /extra can also help update from an older version of Slackware to a newer one, and keep your Slackware system up to date. In addition, the slacktrack utility (in extra/) will help you build and maintain your own packages.

- Web browsers galore! Includes KDE's Konqueror 3.5.7, SeaMonkey 1.1.2 (this is the replacement for the Mozilla Suite), and the immensely popular Firefox 2.0.0.4, as well as the Thunderbird 2.0.0.4 email and news client with advanced junk mail filtering.

- The complete K Desktop Environment (KDE) version 3.5.7, including the KOffice productivity suite, networking tools, GUI development with KDevelop, multimedia tools (including the amazing Amarok music player), the Konqueror web browser and file manager, dozens of games and utilities, international language support, and more.

- A collection of GTK+ based applications including pidgin-2.0.2, gimp-2.2.15, gkrellm-2.2.10, gxine-0.5.11, xchat-2.8.2, xsane-0.994, and pan-0.131.

- Large repository of extra software packages compiled and ready to run. This includes various window managers, the Java(TM) 2 Software Development Kit Standard Edition, libsafe (buffer overflow protection for additional security), ISDN support, additional 802.11 drivers, and much more (see the /extra directory).

Read the full release announcement here.
Download here.

Alpha Release : Ubuntu 7.10 Tribe 2

The Tribe 2 release of Ubuntu was announced. If we're lucky, we got it all right the first time. Big thanks to the crew." This message has been posted on the distribution's current changelog, together with a large number of package updates. The upcoming Slackware Linux 12.0 is a major new version; this is the first time a Slackware release will default to a 2.6 kernel (version 2.6.21.5), now compiled with GCC 4 (version 4.1.2). Many other packages also come in their latest versions: the modular X.Org 7.2 with Xgl and Compiz support, KDE 3.5.7, Xfce 4.4.1 and, at long last, Apache 2.2 with PHP 5. As usual, there is no ISO image available for download, but interested beta testers should keep an eye on this FTP server which periodically publishes unofficial ISO images built from the current tree; alternatively, you can build your own DVD image by following these instructions.
